Alberta Launches Regulated Online Gambling Market

Alberta officially introduced its regulated online gambling market on July 13, becoming the second Canadian province after Ontario to permit licensed private bookmakers and online casinos. The new framework aims to shift player activity from unlicensed platforms to a legally supervised sector.

Market Launch and Operator Readiness

Prior to the market opening, approximately fifty companies completed the registration process by paying a $141,000 fee. Roughly twenty operators are currently prepared to accept players on the licensed platforms. The provincial government projects the initiative will generate roughly $53.5M in revenue during its first year of operation.

Regulatory Standards and Market Adjustments

All authorized platforms must implement unified responsible gambling measures. These include cross-operator self-exclusion programs and individual betting limits for each user. The regulatory shift has already prompted early changes in the market, with Estonian provider Coolbet announcing its withdrawal from Alberta to comply with the new licensing requirements.
