The UK Culture, Media and Sport Committee has formally requested information from the Gambling Commission regarding the upcoming Financial Risk Assessments for bettors. The parliamentary body seeks clarification on the evidence base and methodology behind the checks following the regulator's announcement of a two-stage implementation plan.
Parliamentary Inquiries and Deadlines
The committee's correspondence outlines five specific inquiries to be answered by July 24. Officials are asking for the full dataset used to determine financial thresholds and an estimate of how many recreational players will be affected compared to current rules. Additionally, the letter requests a detailed breakdown of stakeholder consultations and the selection criteria for the implementation groups, specifically noting the potential exclusion of the horseracing industry.
CMS Committee chair Dame Caroline Dinenage emphasized the need for regulatory changes to balance player support with the sector's economic impact. "The Gambling Commission needs to be clear about how the assessments will work and should work closely with bookmakers to ensure new obligations do not impose undue burdens on responsible businesses," she stated.
Industry representatives have expressed concerns regarding the timing of the rollout. Grainne Hurst, Chief Executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, noted that key issues regarding the reliability and practical operation of the checks remain unresolved. The British Horseracing Association has also raised objections, fearing specific impacts on horseracing betting.
The Gambling Commission confirmed the launch of the controversial financial checks earlier this week. The decision to proceed was made prior to the publication of a full evaluation of the pilot programme conducted last year.
